The Ultimate Safari
Fly into Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where we will be met by the truck. Once loaded we head for Karen Camp, a great site on the edge of Nairobi. Cold beers and hot food. We will stay here tonight.
We leave Nairobi in the morning and drive north to Nanyuki. We will have plenty of time to take the opportunity for a visit to the wildlife sanctuary at the Mount Kenya Safari Club this afternoon, before striking out for the Mountain Rock Lodge where we will spend the night.
Today we aim to arrive at the gate of the Sweetwaters Game Reserve first thing in the morning. The reserve boasts all of the “big five”, and we will spend the whole day game driving, with every chance of sighting elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino and even the elusive leopard. Sweetwaters is also home to a chimpanzee sanctuary, currently housing 24 orphaned chimps. Tonight we will be bush camping out in the middle of the park under the African sky.
We start the day with an early morning game drive in order to witness the park and its wildlife at dawn. After which, we exit the park and drive through Nyeri and the Aberdare Mountains, stopping at a vantage point looking out over the Great Rift Valley on the way. Continuing our journey on to the town of Nakuru, we will spend an hour or so here before heading out to Kembu Campsite.
Today, we will make a stop in the town of Nakuru for an hour or so before heading on to the wonderful Lake Nakuru National Park. The park is home to abundant wildlife. - lion, leopard, rhino, flamingo, buffalo to name but a few. We will spend the day game driving through the park, before making camp for the night up at Makalia Falls.
Following a dawn game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park, we continue on to the majestic Lake Naivasha where we will be spending the night at Fisherman’s Camp. The lake itself has a surface area of 150 square kilometres, and boasts one of the largest populations of hippo in Africa. During the day, we will be visiting Elsamere, home of the late George and Joy Adamson, of Born Free fame.
Today, we leave this region of Kenya, and heading south, pass back through Nairobi on our way down towards the border of Kenya and Tanzania where we will spend the night.
Our first full day in Tanzania, and today we will drive up to Karatu, a small town nestled on the lush green southern fringes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Here, on the gentle slopes of this vast extinct volcano we will make our camp for the night.
Our day starts with a game drive into the world famous Ngorongoro Crater. The crater is the world’s largest unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera. It was formed when a giant volcano erupted and collapsed in on itself some 3 million years ago. It is around 2000 feet deep and its floor offers over a hundred square miles of refuge for some of the most densely populated wildlife found in Africa. We’ll be descending into the crater in 4 wheel drive vehicles, where we’ll spend the entire morning on safari before heading back to the Meserani Snake Park where we will be spending the night.
Leaving Snake Park after breakfast, today we have a big drive ahead of us as we head south to the fantastic city of Dar Es Salaam. This colourful city is steeped in history from its humble beginnings as a small fishing village, through colonialism, financial collapse, and re-growth to its current status as one of the world’s leading shipping ports. To the south of the bustling city lies the tranquil beauty of Mikadi Beach, a long stretch of sweeping sand, fringed with swaying palms trees. Tonight, we will make camp on the beach and fall asleep to the sound of the Indian Ocean.
We leave the truck in Dar Es Salaam this morning, and after breakfast, set sail on the morning ferry for the island of Zanzibar. Located in the Indian Ocean, the “Spice Island” is situated around 25 miles from the Tanzanian coast. Zanzibar is 60 miles long and 20 miles wide, and is characterized by beautiful sandy beaches with fringing coral reefs, great food, and by the magical history of Stone Town - the only functioning ancient city in East Africa. Zanzibar will be our home for the remainder of the trip. We will spend our first night in Stone Town.
Today we take the spice tour on the way up to Nungwi at the top of the Island. The spice tour takes us through plantations, gardens and forests, and is a unique opportunity to visit the local farms and talk to the farmers who will dazzle your senses with the traditional fruits and spices of Zanzibar. Depending on the season, you may see, smell and taste up to 50 different varieties. On the way to the plantations we have the option of visiting the Maruhubi Palace Ruins.
Arriving at Nungwi Beach later that afternoon, we will spend the next 2 nights here relaxing on the beach, eating seafood, snorkeling, kayaking, or sailing on a dhow. Whatever takes your fancy.
Our last night together will be spent back in Stone Town, where no doubt a fine meal may well be in order to take stock of the whole adventure.
Morning ferry crossing back to Dar Es Salaam where you will fly out from either that afternoon or the following day
