Kenya and Tanzania

Tour Itinerary

Day 1:                         Accommodation:        (D)        

Fly in to Nairobi, You will be picked up from the airport and taken to the Silver Springs Hotel in the city centre. This deluxe property offers exceptional facilities and service.   Relax in your room after your long flight.  This evening, get to know your group and guide over dinner in the hotel.

Day 2:                         Accommodation:        (B, L, D)

You leave Nairobi in the morning and drive north to Nanyuki, a market town in the central-east Rift Valley area. You will have the opportunity to visit the wildlife sanctuary at The Mt Kenya Safari Club in the afternoon before stopping at the Mountain Rock Lodge for the night.  You will certainly enjoy the tranquil surroundings of this unique country Lodge tucked away in the woods on the lower slopes of Mt Kenya.  Overnight Mountain Rock Lodge.

Day 3:                         Accommodation: camping_icon        (B, L, D)        

This morning you drive up to Sweetwaters Game Reserve, situated between the foot hills of the Aberdares and the magnificent snow capped Mount Kenya. It boasts an astounding variety of animals including the non-indigenous chimpanzees and the 'Big 5'.  Your accommodation will be at Sweetwaters Tented Camp which lies in the heart of 24,000 acres of privately owned Ol Pejeta - Sweetwaters Conservancy, and enjoys magnificent views across the game  studded plains. You game drive for most of the day. and tonight you are bush camping out in the middle of the park under the African sky. Camping.

Day 4:                         Accommodation: camping_icon         (B, L, D)     

After a morning game drive, you  exit the Park and continue through to Nyeri and the Aberdare’s stopping en-route at a lookout over the Great Rift Valley.  You’ll stop in the town of Nakuru for supplies; this is a good place for souvenir and handicraft shopping, or to visit an internet café. A short drive brings you to your camp within a well secured farm with beautiful gardens and excellent facilities. A great place to kick-back.  Accommodated.

Day 5:                         Accommodation:          (B, L, D)          

Later in the morning you enter Nakuru National Park where you spend the afternoon on a Game Drive. This small park is packed with wildlife. The Soda Lake has over 400 species of bird life including thousands of pink flamingos; an ornithologists paradise.  It is also home to both the black and white rhino and was where many of the scenes from the film “Out of Africa” were shot.  You will be camping at one of the sites in the Park tonight.  Camping.
 

Day 6:                         Accommodation:         (B, L, D)           

Up early for a morning Game Drive before exiting the Park and driving to Lake Naivasha. This afternoon you take a boat ride on the lake viewing hippos, fish eagles and more birdlife before arriving at Elsamere, the former home of the late Joy and George Adamson.  Joy became world famous for her pioneering conservation work and relationship with the lioness Elsa, as told in her best selling book and subsequent film 'Born Free'.  After a video presentation on the life of the Adamsons, spend some time relaxing over a delicious afternoon tea in the gardens.  The gardens are a haven for lovers of nature, set in Acacia forest on the banks of Lake Naivasha.  Overnight at Fishermans Camp on the lake-shore.  Accommodated.

Day 7:                         Accommodation:        (B, L, D)            

We depart early for the long drive into the Masai Mara National Reserve - stopping along the way for lunch. As we get closer to the park you will see herds of goats & cows wandering the vast plains and dutifully looked over by their Masai owners.  You enter the main gate by mid afternoon and game drive through to Acacia Tented Camp, your accommodation for 2 nights. Permanent Tented Camp.

Day 8:                         Accommodation:       (B, L, D)             

You spend the day Game driving around the park. You will not be disappointed with the game in the Masai Mara; vast herds of zebra, wildebeest and antelope and the 'Big 5' (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo & rhino).  The Masai Mara is quite simply one of the greatest wildlife attractions in the world and at this time of year you may see the migration which is spectacular.  Have lunch by the Mara River and then free time to wander about for photo opportunities of whatever animals might be around the river at the time.  In the afternoon you visit a Masaai village; meet the local tribe people and learn about their age-old customs and the way they live their semi-nomadic lifestyle.  Overnight at Acacia Tented Camp.  Permanent tent with bedding.

Day 9:                         Accommodation:       (B, L, D)      

After breakfast you will Game Drive out of the Park and journey back to Nairobi.  Your campground for tonight is located in the upmarket suburb of Karen on the outskirts of Nairobi. You will have the opportunity to stock up on personal supplies at a large modern supermarket and maybe visit one of the nearby bars or internet cafes. Accommodated.

Day 10:                       Accommodation:        (B, L, D)  

Today you cross into Tanzania via the Namanga border and drive through Arusha and the northern highlands. After climbing the Manyara Escarpment, the vegetation becomes more lush and green - especially around the highlands of Karatu where you overnight. The extinct volcano of Ol Deani has gentle slopes and is a prominent feature of the landscape. Camping.

Day 11:                       Accommodation:    (B, L, D)            

You enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area early in the morning and spend a half day Game Driving down in the Crater.  The Ngorongoro Crater and the Conservation Area are without a doubt some of the most beautiful parts of Tanzania, steeped in history and teeming with wildlife.  Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze; and you will hopefully spot the 'Big 5'.  Outside the Crater’s ridge, tall Masai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures through the highland slopes. This evening you camp at The Snake Park.. (don’t worry the snakes are locked up..) You can take a guided tour and learn about some of the most dangerous snakes in the world - from the Black and Green Mamba, Egyptian Cobra, Puff Adders and many more. This evening relax and enjoy a fully equipped camp site and legendary bar.  Camping.

Day 12:                       Accommodation:     (B, L, D)          

After a brief stop in Arusha for some supplies, you head towards Dar es Salaam stopping at Tembo Campsite around the halfway mark. Camping.

Day 13:                       Accommodation:     (B, L, D)               

Today you continue on to Dar es Salaam where we stay the night.  Camping.

Day 14:                       Accommodation:      (B, L, D)             

We leave Dar es Salaam early on the morning ferry to Zanzibar, arriving at the Island before lunch. We will be transferred from the ferry terminal to the hotel in the old town (Stone Tone) by mini bus. Little has changed here in the last 200 years.  It is a place of busy bazaars, winding alleyways, mosques and grand Arab houses with ornately carved and studded doors.  Stone Town was recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 15:           Accommodation:      (B, L, D)              

You leave the overland vehicle and depart on the early morning ferry to Zanzibar arriving at the Island before lunch. You will be transferred from the ferry terminal to the hotel in the old town by mini bus.  Little has changed in the last 200 years in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings. This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the brass-studded, carved, wooden doors - there are more than 500 different examples of this handiwork. The afternoon is free to explore the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways, and watch the sun sink into the sea over a cocktail at the end of the day. Accommodated.

Day 16:                       Accommodation:     (B, L, D)               

The history of Zanzibar would be not be complete without the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices which brought the Sultans of Oman and the beginnings of the infamous slave trade.  Your half day tour will wow you with the sheer number of spices produced and their incredible value for many ailments.  Later this afternoon you continue to the northern end of the island to Nungwi Beach. Accommodated. 

Day 17:                       Accommodation:     (B, L)

Free day to relax on Nungwi Beach. Diving, fishing and sailing on a Dhow are just some of the optional activities you can do here.  This evening dine out at one of the many beach side restaurants (own cost). Accommodated.

Day 18:                       Accommodation:     (B, L, D)

Today you return to Stone Town and you have free time to continue sightseeing and do some shopping. Accommodated.

 


NOTE:
Africa does not run like clockwork; therefore please do not expect the streamlined travel arrangements associated with some other continents. There will be times when you will need to be patient and philosophical about your travels and have a sense of humour.
